Elder care at home

Contact the treating doctor if you notice new confusion, a fall, repeated dizziness, reduced eating or drinking, or readings that are outside the range the doctor gave you.
Bedridden patient care
Patients who stay in bed after a stroke, fracture, serious illness or in advanced age need careful daily handling. Lying in one position for a long time can cause bedsores (skin damage from pressure).
Nursing support may include regular position changes, skin checks, hygiene, catheter care where prescribed, and help with feeding as advised. If the doctor recommends it, a hospital bed on rent can make turning and care easier.
Contact the doctor if you see red or broken skin that does not improve, fever, a cough with difficulty breathing, or less urine than usual.
Post-surgery nursing care
After surgery, the hospital gives discharge instructions about wound care, medicines, movement and follow-up visits. Families can find these hard to manage alone in the first days.

Contact the surgeon if the wound becomes more red, swollen, painful or starts leaking, or if the patient has fever, severe pain or swelling in the leg.
Long-term patient care
Some patients need nursing care for months, for example with a long-term illness, after a major stroke, or in advanced age. In long-term care, consistency and trust matter a lot.

Keep regular follow-ups with the treating doctor, and share the nurse's records at each visit so treatment decisions are based on accurate information.
Short-term nursing support
Short-term care is useful for a few days or weeks: right after discharge, during a course of prescribed injections, or when the family carer needs a break.
Tell us the expected duration when you call so the arrangement can be planned properly from the start.
If the patient's condition gets worse during this period, speak to the doctor rather than simply extending home care.
